Why Does Canada Use the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)?
Canada uses the CRS to identify skilled workers most likely to thrive in the Canadian job market. The CRS is designed to benefit both Canada and its immigrants by selecting individuals who are expected to make significant contributions to Canada’s economy.
The CRS uses a detailed, evidence-based scoring and ranking system based on decades of research into the labour market outcomes of immigrants. Studies have shown that newcomers who are younger, have strong work experience, solid education, and proficiency in English or French tend to integrate well into Canada’s workforce.
Evidence supporting the CRS’s effectiveness includes a 2020 report by IRCC. The report examined the labour market performance of Express Entry immigrants since its inception in 2015. The findings highlighted that these immigrants enjoy high employment rates, strong earnings, and low unemployment—outcomes directly linked to the CRS’s targeted selection criteria.
