Quebec to Triple Financial Requirements for Study Permit Applicants by 2026

Quebec will introduce significant increases to its proof of funds requirements for study permit applications starting January 1, 2026. For some students, the required amount will more than triple.

These higher financial requirements apply to both new international students submitting their first study permit application and current students who need to extend their permit.

Students under the age of 18 will face an increase of more than triple the current amount needed for basic living expenses. Students aged 18 or older will need more than 9,000 dollars above today’s requirement.

All amounts are in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Proof of funds requirements rise based on the number of family members included in the application, such as a spouse or dependents.

Important note: These amounts do not include tuition fees or travel costs. Applicants must prove they can cover all of these expenses to qualify for a study permit.

Why Quebec’s Requirements Are Different

Quebec has a special immigration agreement with the federal government. This gives the province the authority to set its own financial requirements for temporary residents, including international students. As a result, Quebec’s updated funds requirement will be higher than the rest of Canada, which follows the guidelines set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

When Students Must Show Proof of Funds

International students planning to study in Quebec must provide financial proof at both the provincial level and the federal level. This applies to new applications and extensions.

Students must show proof of funds at the following stages:

  1. When applying for their first Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ)
  2. When applying for their first federal study permit
  3. When renewing their CAQ, if required
  4. When extending their federal study permit, if required

The same money is assessed by both Quebec and IRCC. Students do not need to show additional funds at the federal stage.

Accepted Proof of Funds Documents

Quebec’s immigration ministry accepts the following types of documents to show financial capacity:

  • Proof of recent money transfers, such as funds sent from abroad to a Quebec bank account
  • Authorization to transfer funds from countries with currency controls
  • Official scholarship or bursary letters showing monthly and yearly amounts
  • Recent pay stubs
  • A bank letter confirming the current account balance
  • The most recent income tax notice of assessment
  • Bank statements from the last three months that include the account holder’s name and balance
  • An updated bank book, along with proof of ownership
