The Quebec government’s Ministered de immigration, de la Francization et de Intégration has set a cap on family sponsorship applications, which is in place as of today, June 26, 2024, and will last until June 25, 2026.
During this time, 13,000 applications are restricted by the cap:
> 10,400 for common-law couples, spouses, and dependent children (18 years of age and older).
> 2,600 for moms, dads, grandparents, fathers, or other qualifying family members.
Applications will no longer be accepted by the Ministered after this cap is reached.
Exceptions to this cap include:
> A minor reliant on a sponsor.
> Adoptable minor children that the sponsor desires.
> A small child who is orphaned and belongs to the brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandchild, or granddaughter of the sponsor.
> Adult kid of a sponsor who is reliant on a parent because of a disability.
The individual being sponsored cannot be married or in a common-law partnership in order to be exempt from the cap.
This cap does not apply to applications to add dependents of the sponsored individual already covered by the application or to those of sponsored individuals waiting to be admitted as permanent residents following an application that has been approved.
When the cap is reached, an announcement will be made by the Ministère. Once the cap has been reached, the Ministèrewill return all non-exempt applications without processing them or collecting the application fee.
The surge of temporary immigrants has been blamed for the housing issue in the province by Quebec Premier François Legault in the past.
